Neal Schutte – Founder & Director
Neal is a technophile and entrepreneur and has more than 15 years’ experience in various aspects of intellectual property. He’s a multi-jurisdictional patent and trade mark attorney with a background in electrical engineering and power electronics.
Prior to founding Patenteur, he established successful practices at law firms overseas and locally, including at Australia's premier national IP firm. He also has substantial experience as in-house innovation counsel, including managing the IP portfolio of the world's second largest global mining company, Rio Tinto. During his time at Rio Tinto, the company was awarded the Thomson Reuters 2012 Australian Innovation Award, which is judged on patent quality, success rate, globalisation, and influence.
Neal's experience also includes driving the IP direction and providing commercial advice for a number of Australian technology companies, as well as consulting to European and Asian advisory and technology firms.
An IP generalist, Neal is particularly skilled in patent law, including patent drafting and prosecution, portfolio analyses and opinions, freedom to operate studies, negotiations and IP agreements, patent portfolio strategy & management, as well as contentious proceedings. Neal has also been published in a number of IP publications.
Having a personal interest in information and communications technology, Neal has extensive professional experience with patenting ICT inventions, including software, computer architectures, apps, communication networks, business methods, online transactions and electronic circuits, along with a broad scope of general engineering technologies.
Neal holds degrees in electrical engineering, law and intellectual property.
Anna Harcombe – Trade Mark Attorney
Anna is our resident IP Administrator and TM expert. She is a registered Australian trade mark attorney and has extensive knowledge of trade mark, patent and design registration procedures.
In the past she has also worked at one of Australia’s largest independent IP specialist firms, and was a trade mark paralegal at one of the world's leading international law firms with offices in the United Kingdom, Asia Pacific and Australia.
Dr. Nigel Chen-Tan – IP Consultant
Nigel is a scientist and philomath. Along with his commercial experience, Nigel has experience from both sides of the playing field, as a research scientist who has worked on the cutting edge of technology, and as an attorney seeking to protect new technology.
Nigel has been engaged in internationally recognised research in the fields of material science and nanotechnology. He had also worked as a mineralogist with an international nickel mining company.
Nigel was trained at Western Australia’s largest independent IP firm, and is currently serving on the WA Committee of the Licensing Executives Society.
Nigel believes that every thought has the latent ability to transform the world in the hands of change makers. These thoughts form ambitious ideas, resulting in technology that benefits others. He seeks to assist these change makers in realising their ambitious thoughts.
Nigel holds a PhD in Applied Physics, a Master’s degree of Intellectual Property and is currently studying a Master’s degree in Business Administration.
